RH, DH and the PH

The changes brought about by the automated election was just astounding that even the most cynical of critics admit it is a resounding success.  Now, that the counting of votes is almost finished, and the winners - except for the VP race which is still a tight one as of this posting - can already be fairly ascertained one question comes to mind: What now of the RH Bill?

Noynoy Aquino, the Philippines next president, has previously announced his support for the RH Bill. However, as the Presidential race got more heated and the battle for endorsement from religious leaders became more intense and crucial, he changed his position. As more and more election results were transmitted has also become obvious that the pro-RH senatoriables - Lisa Masa, Risa Hontiveros, and Satur Ocampo - wouldn't get a seat in the senate. So what now of the RH Bill?

Before the election fever even caught on I remember seeing this tarpaulin at green meadows saying:

Yes to Life, No to RH bill.

Yes to life! Indeed, yes to life...but what is life?

The answer escapes me. Hence, i want to ask this questions to the church:

For a child

1) Does life mean going out on the streets begging for money because your parents cannot afford another child but still had one anyway?

2) Does life mean fending for your younger brother and foregoing school, play and your childhood because your parents have to work and they can't afford a nanny.

3) Does life mean having to stay home instead of going to school because although gradeschool and highschool is free, your parents cannot afford the jeepney fare for you to go to school.

4) Does life mean you have to wake up at 4am to get to the morning shift of your class because your family can only afford public school and the government cannot additional classrooms and hence have to have a morning and afternoon shift.

5) Does life mean not getting even the barest necessities: clean water, meal thrice a day, security...?

6) Does life mean growing up without a father or mother because they need to work abroad to feed your family. And even then, your peers would still consider you lucky...

Should it not?

For a mother:

1) Does life mean having to bear another child again, despite the fact that you might actually die from it?

2) Does life mean having to see another child of your go to the streets, beg for money, and run the risk of being run over by a speeding car?

3) Does life mean having no choice in the matter of whether or not you want another child?

4) Does life have to mean that the only way to live is to rely on dole-outs, of waiting in a politicians house because s/he is giving relief goods, of forever living in debt because your income is not even enough for hand-to-mouth?

5) Does life have to mean going overseas to be a domestic helper (DH) and taking care of someone else' child because you know that love and caring for your child alone won't let you both survive. That is, of course, if you were able to get a job abroad and will not be victimized by unscrupulous recruiters.

For a man:

(and here sorry it's hard for me to emphatise)

1) Does life have to mean living in debt because your wife has to give birth again?

2) Does life have to mean bearing the risk of being told someday by your child: 'why you even brought them in this world anyway?'

Does it?

If it is...shouldn't we have a choice to choose life then?

If it is...i'd rather wish not to have lived at all.

  1. I heard there were a couple of documentaries about kids working grueling hours in various industries in the Philippines. One of them about scallop divers, and another about kids who haul lumber. I need to find those documentaries and watch them...

  2. Yeah, these are documentaries made by i-witnes shown on GMA 7 - a local station - I think it actually won some international awards and brought the UNICEF's attention to the kids.

Here's part one of the link 'Batang Kalabao', a documentary of kids working a job which would make even a grown up man cry:
